ICL is the abbreviated version of the private cricket body Indian Cricket League. This league was created at the initiative of the Essel Group with Subhash Chandra at its helm. With its headquarters in Mumbai, it aims to promote and encourage cricket amidst the youngsters, preparing then for international standards in the sport.
Although new in its inception, but it has emerged as one of the counterattack against the existing cricket board that is the BCCI. Kapil Dev, Kiran More, amid others constitutes the executive board of ICL (Indian Cricket League). The ICL has also invited some of international repute players as well including Brian Lara, Tony Greig.
The ICL intends to initially comprise of 6 teams, which in a span of 3 years would expand up to 16. The teams are expected to play Twenty20 format match for the prize money of $1 million, which are likely to be held in mid-November 2007marking its inaugural season.
Each of these teams would have a mentor, psychologist, physiotherapist, and even a media manager. These teams are intended to play at home as well as abroad to get the maximum exposure and develop as an international level player.
ICL or Indian Cricket League aims to set up academies throughout the country. This effort is undertaken so as to let the young cricket talent gain from the amenities provided at these academies. In this manner, ICL plans to create a team of players that could equivalent the international level of cricket and represent India in an appropriate way. |
