ICL will be successful in future: Razzaq

May 12, 2008

Karachi (PTI): Pakistani allrounder Abdul Razzaq believes the unofficial Indian Cricket League has a bright future and should be credited for popularising Twenty20 cricket.

Razzaq, one of the few players to sign for the ICL in its early days, said the Essel group-backed venture had slowly established itself as a successful private league and would do better in future.

"Their second season was better with more interest from people. Advertisers and sponsors are also taking more interest in it. So I feel the ICL has a good future," he said.

Razzaq said he had no regrets about his decision to play in the ICL despite the strong stand taken by the Pakistan Cricket Board against players aligning with the rebel league.

"The ICL is just like any other private league or tournament. And their main aim appears to be promoting cricket and offer employment opportunities to more and more players."

Razzaq, one of the most prolific performers for Pakistan in ODI cricket, said the ICL would get recognition some day.

The PCB has also not allowed the 16 players aligning with the ICL to play in domestic matches. Employers of the players have been asked to clarify their status and the issue will be discussed at the PCB's next governing body meeting tomorrow.

Razzaq said because of the ICL he had become a big fan of Twenty20 cricket and enjoyed playing this form of the game.

"Now I find it hard to follow a one-day international match on television. But I take time off to watch Twenty20 cricket matches because everything happens so quickly and the batsmen and bowlers try to give their best," he said.

Razzaq said he is still hopeful of playing for Pakistan again despite the ban on him.
